We are proud to announce that BISM’s manufacturing operations are now ISO 9001:2015 certified! The certification, issued by Intertek (accredited by ANAB) on April 3, 2026, covers our Baltimore headquarters sewing operations, our Raleigh site (cutting, sewing, and embroidery), and both our Salisbury cutting and sewing operations.
Okay, But What Is ISO 9001?
Think of it this way: any manufacturer can say they make a quality product, but ISO 9001 confirms it.
ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, writes standards for how organizations should run, covering everything from quality to data security. ISO 9001 is the standard for quality management.
The benefit of this particular certification is that it doesn’t rely on individual quality checks (which are already handled by BISM employees at the end of the line). Instead, it analyzes the processes behind each item: the steps, the checks, the paper trail, confirming that the system is built to catch problems before they reach you, not after.
While we have long built to these principles, this certification is an affirmation of our dedication to delivering quality products to all of our customers.
What This Means When You Order From Us
To earn the certificate, we needed to make sure that:
- We know exactly what you asked for, in writing, before we start. Requirements don’t get lost between the sales conversation and the sewing floor.
- Every step of making your product has someone responsible for it. Not “quality is everyone’s job” in the vague sense, but an actual named process owner for cutting, for sewing, for embroidery, who’s accountable if something’s off.
- If something does go wrong, it gets caught, logged, and fixed at the root, not patched over and forgotten. We’re required to track it, figure out why it happened, and close the loop.
- We check our own work on a schedule, not just when someone remembers to. Internal audits happen regularly on top of the external ones.
- Leadership is on the hook for keeping the system honest, not just the shop floor. This isn’t a program that lives in a binder somewhere; it gets reviewed at the top.
None of this means we never make mistakes. It just means mistakes get caught faster, fixed properly, and are less likely to repeat.
How We Got Here
Getting certified meant rebuilding our standard operating procedures from the ground up and building an ISO library, one central, controlled home for every procedure, standard, and non-conformity record we track. Some of that is standardized across all four sites; some is specific to what a given location actually does, since Baltimore sewing, Raleigh’s full cutting-sewing-embroidery line, and Salisbury’s separate cutting and sewing operations aren’t running identical processes.
The real shift wasn’t paperwork, though. It was a mindset change. We’ve always focused on catching problems when they happen. ISO 9001 pushed us toward something harder: building systems that stop those problems from happening in the first place. That shows up as:
- Named process owners, instead of quality being everyone’s job and no one’s job.
- Visibility: problems and improvement ideas get tracked and seen, not quietly handled and forgotten.
- An expectation of continuous improvement, not a system that freezes in place the day the certificate arrives.
Why It Matters
For our customers, this is a guarantee you can actually point to: an independent auditor confirmed BISM has real processes for meeting your requirements and fixing problems when they come up. When you order from us, you know what you’re getting, whether it’s pillows, uniforms, or anything else, regardless of which of our facilities makes it.
Internally, it’s already changing things too. Having this discipline built into how we operate gives us a real foundation to grow our manufacturing business without quality slipping as we scale.
