Lauren Wheatley has a passion for creative writing—especially fantasy—and loves activities like shopping and going to the movies. But as her vision changed due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP), navigating everyday life became challenging. By 2021, she found herself increasingly relying on others and struggling to maintain her independence—especially at night.
It was through the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) that Lauren learned about BISM’s Comprehensive Orientation Rehabilitation and Empowerment (CORE) program, which she joined with hopes of regaining independence. During the program, Lauren built skills that helped her approach life’s challenges with newfound confidence.
One of her most significant milestones came during an out-of-town trip to Salem, Massachusetts. As a fan of supernatural stories, Lauren was thrilled to visit Salem, even if it was in April during the off-season. She navigated a surprise Greyhound stop in Boston, before arriving in Salem. Once there, she explored the town on her own, finding a welcoming cafe and a museum to visit. For Lauren, the trip symbolized the independence she had been working so hard to achieve.
Lauren’s experience at CORE went beyond learning new skills. She formed friendships, made professional connections, and doubled down on a desire to work. Her determination paid off, leading her to a job in BISM’s paper department. She even participated in a promotional video showcasing the variety of jobs within BISM, excited to share her journey with others.
In 2025, Lauren was nominated for the National Industries for the Blind’s “Employee of the Year” award. The honor took her by surprise: “I had no idea why or where it came from,” she shared. “I’m just happy to help others and be part of my community.”
When asked what advice she would share to others, she said, “Be ready to say yes to things. You don’t know if you can do something unless you try.” She hopes that BISM will continue to challenge and support people in ways that help them discover their potential, just as it did for her.
