The SAIL (Seniors Achieving Independent Living) program at BISM is specifically designed for individuals aged 55 and older who are blind.
Similar to our CORE program, SAIL focused on teaching essential skills for independence but meets twice a week, providing a flexible yet comprehensive training schedule.
SAIL program participants receiving training in:
- Independent Living: Learn practical skills to manage daily tasks and maintain autonomy in your home.
- Braille: Acquire proficiency in reading and writing braille to enhance communication and access to information.
- Cane Travel: Develop mobility skills to navigate your surroundings independently, confidently and safely using a white cane.
- Computer Technology: Gain knowledge in using adaptive technology and computer applications to stay connected and productive.
- Crafts: Engage in creative activities that foster dexterity and provide a sense of accomplishment.
- Seminars: Participate in weekly discussions to break down myths and develop a positive attitude about blindness.
- Offsite Field Trips: Experience confidence-building outings that encourage community integration and social interaction.
The SAIL program is dedicated to improving the quality of life for blind seniors by providing the skills and support needed to achieve self-confidence and independence. It is offered in our Baltimore, Cumberland, Hagerstown and Salisbury locations.
