Ryan’s Story: How BISM Helped Him Build Confidence and Skills for the Future

Ryan Jenkins, an 11th-grade student, never imagined that a simple decision to attend a BISM youth program would completely change his life.

Ryan has multiple eye conditions that affect his vision. He lives with nystagmus and retina pigment ptosis, which makes it difficult for him to see longer distances and results in less clarity in his vision.

A few years ago, after hearing his friends rave about their experiences at BISM, Ryan didn’t want to miss out and decided to give it a try. One free Saturday, he took a leap and saw for himself what BISM’s programs were all about. Looking back, Ryan considers it one of the best decisions he’s ever made.

From the start, Ryan jumped into BISM’s GLIDE (Gaining Leadership, Independence, Direction, and Experience) workshops, where he learned essential life skills such as interviewing for jobs with confidence, meal prepping, and fire safety.

But the programs aren’t just about practical knowledge – they also are about forming connections. Through the workshops, Ryan met other blind people his age from all over Maryland, and the friendships he built have made all the difference in his life.

Ryan’s BISM journey didn’t stop there. He also participated in BISM’s summer programs, which gave him even more opportunities to grow. First, he joined the STAR (Students Training in Advocacy and Responsibility) program, which allowed him to explore potential career opportunities and what each profession entailed.

Ryan transitioned into the  Gold STAR program, which focuses on life skills and real-world job experience. In an immersive 4-week experience, Ryan and other Gold STAR participants live in apartments during the first two weeks learning skills needed for everyday life. In the final two weeks, participants work for a local company, gaining “real world” experience in a professional work environment.

Beyond the classroom and workplace experiences, BISM’s teen programs also include fun weekend activities. Ryan had the chance to go indoor skydiving and tackle an indoor obstacle course. Activities also are planned to bring participants together outside of their learning environment such as trips to a local mall and a kayaking adventure.

Reflecting on his journey, Ryan feels these programs have significantly shaped his future. They’ve not only helped him discover career interests but also have given him the confidence to believe in his ability to achieve his goals.

If you’re considering these programs, my advice is simple – sign up!” says Ryan. “It may feel intimidating at first, but trust me, taking that first step leads to invaluable lessons, lifelong friendships, and memories you’ll never forget.

Ryan’s story is just one example of how BISM is shaping the futures of young people, giving them the skills, confidence, and experiences they need to succeed.

Your generosity empowers the next generation to reach their full potential and make stories like Ryan’s possible. And, thanks to donors like you, BISM can offer these life-changing programs to young people across Maryland at no charge.
