On any given day, Wenisha Richardson, the Human Resources Administrative Support Specialist at BISM’s Raleigh site, is busy helping onboard new employees, filling out forms, and supporting the HR team. While she may seem like a natural, this is her first HR role — and her first office job.
Diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease at seven years old, a rare genetic eye condition that starts in childhood, Wenisha’s vision worsened as she got older. Faced with the challenge of navigating the world without sight, Wenisha experienced significant anxiety that kept her from stepping outside her comfort zone.
Her turning point came when she attended a school for blind children, where she learned life skills like using a computer and cooking, which gave her the confidence to try new things.
Wenisha began her career assembling materials in a warehouse in Durham, NC, before joining BISM in 2018. After working in the Sewing and Cutting Departments, she knew she wanted to pursue her dream of working in an office. With encouragement from BISM’s HR team, Wenisha applied for her current role, where she’s been thriving for almost a year.
“This job has pushed me to learn more and grow. I used to think, ‘It is what it is,’ but now I want to gain as much knowledge as I can.”
Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, people like Wenisha can build the skills and confidence they need to achieve independence. Your support makes a lasting difference.
