Linwood Boyd’s story is one of hard work, perseverance, and how support from people like you makes a real difference.

Linwood’s journey hasn’t been easy. In 2004, he lost his sight at the age of 37 when medication for spinal meningitis caused optic nerve damage, leaving him almost completely blind.

Faced with a sudden, life-changing challenge, Linwood didn’t give up even though losing his sight forced him to redefine his independence and adapt to a new way of living. He found his way to BISM and enrolled in our Comprehensive Orientation Rehabilitation and Empowerment (CORE) program, where he learned the skills needed to live independently.

“It was like learning everything over again, but I achieved my goal. Now, I can pick up my cane and go wherever I need to go — no waiting for anyone,” Linwood says.

Linwood’s involvement with BISM set him off on a groundbreaking path. Linwood graduated from the CORE program in June 2006, and since completing the program, he has worked in a variety of roles across BISM, showing just how adaptable and determined he is. Whether in vending, IT, or production, Linwood approaches every task with enthusiasm and a desire to learn.

This summer, Linwood celebrated 19 years with BISM, and we honored him and his remarkable journey with the Peter J. Salmon Award.* His dedication and contributions, especially in our chemical production department, are an inspiration to everyone at BISM.

Your support makes stories like Linwood’s possible. Thanks to your generosity, individuals who are blind can build confidence, regain their independence, and pursue careers they’re proud of.
