JD’s Journey: Overcoming Obstacles and Embracing a Future of Possibilities

JD’s story began with a diagnosis no parent ever wants to hear: Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a condition that slowly robs the eyes of their ability to see.

Diagnosed at two years old, JD’s world started to shrink as his vision began to deteriorate. For his mom, Lauran, the reality of watching her son struggle with something so out of her control was heartbreaking.

It’s hard watching your child struggle to find their way in the dark,” Lauran shared. “It’s the little things that break your heart — the moments when he wakes up in the middle of the night, scared, unable to find me, unable to see me.”

As JD grew older, his vision loss became more apparent. What was once a world full of color and discovery became more challenging to navigate. But Lauran was determined to help JD overcome whatever obstacles he faced, and that’s when BISM came into their lives.

At just 7 years old, JD became one of BISM’s youngest clients and began learning the skills he needed to navigate life with vision loss. With BISM’s support, he’s been learning how to adapt to his changing world while discovering new skills along the way.

Through BISM’s programs, JD is gaining the tools to live independently, including mastering Braille and life skills such as cooking. While these may seem like small victories, for JD and his family, they represent a future full of potential. “BISM has helped me prepare my son for the future,” says Lauran. “It’s given JD friendships and confidence and shown him he can have a full life despite his vision loss.”

One of JD’s most life-changing experiences came from BISM’s summer camp. For the first time, JD was surrounded by other children who shared his experiences and challenges. It was there he learned something incredibly important – blindness doesn’t define what he can do. JD made friends, participated in activities, and had fun – just like every other child.

The camp experience was truly life-changing for him,” Lauran reflects. “He met kids who also faced vision loss and saw that he wasn’t alone.” It was a realization that has stuck with him ever since — a belief that he can do anything, regardless of his vision loss.

JD’s journey is just beginning, but with the support of BISM, his future is filled with possibility. He’s gaining confidence, learning new skills, and building the foundation for a future. His story is a powerful reminder no challenge is insurmountable with the right support and mindset.

At BISM, we’re proud to be part of JD’s journey. His story is a testament to the difference that community, resources, and training can make in the lives of children and adults with vision loss. JD’s future is bright, and with continued support, he’ll continue to grow, thrive, and pursue his dreams, no matter what challenges may come his way.

J.D.’s journey – and the journeys of 100s of other blind and low-vision individuals – are only possible because of the generosity of people like you. Your support makes a lasting difference.
