When Eunice Hurley started losing her vision to glaucoma, everyday life became overwhelming. She couldn’t find things she dropped. She stopped going places alone. Her world felt smaller — and scarier — every day.
Then in 2015, everything changed. She saw a commercial for BISM and picked up the phone.
Through BISM’s SAIL (Seniors Achieving Independent Living) program, Eunice learned to read braille, use a computer, cook for herself, and even navigate public transportation independently. For the first time in years, she didn’t feel stuck — she felt hopeful.
Her confidence grew, and when a job opened up at BISM’s Baltimore production site, she applied. In 2020, she was hired full-time as a Sewing Machine Operator.
“I feel so proud when I put that fabric under the needle and it comes out perfectly aligned,” she says. “And I’m doing it as a blind person.”
Today, Eunice thrives on challenge. She uses her cane with pride and is no longer afraid to be seen.
Because of you, Eunice rediscovered her strength and built a life full of purpose. Thank you for helping make that possible.
