Alicia Crosson: Living Life on Her Terms

When Alicia Crosson started losing her vision in 2019, her life changed. Having built her career in healthcare compliance and quality assurance, Alicia was used to problem-solving—but adapting to blindness required a whole new set of skills.

Encouraged by her low-vision doctor, Alicia enrolled in BISM’s Comprehensive Orientation Rehabilitation and Empowerment (CORE) program in 2022. She wanted to get back to work and live independently, and BISM felt like the right place to start.

At CORE, Alicia honed practical skills to manage her day-to-day life and work life. Learning travel skills was a milestone, as it encouraged her to rely on herself. Alicia even ventured beyond her comfort zone during an out-of-state solo trip to Florida.

There, she explored Disney Springs, got her nails done, and validated the independence she had worked so hard to achieve. “That trip showed me I could rely on my skills and thrive on my own,” she reflects.

Not long after completing CORE, Alicia became the only blind participant in a CompTIA certification program. In addition to the course content, she discovered a new screen reader to help complete assignments. “It was a huge accomplishment for me,” she says.

Her time at BISM also introduced her to a supportive community. Alicia connected with others who shared similar experiences, forming bonds that extended beyond the program. A memorable moment was going to a farm to cut down a Christmas tree, an activity she wouldn’t have done otherwise.

Alicia’s ambitions extend far beyond independence. For over a decade, she dreamed of starting her own catering business, and her time at CORE reignited that passion. She is currently working on a business plan to turn her vision into reality.

To Alicia, blindness isn’t the defining factor in her life. “Blindness can happen to anyone,” she says. “What matters is how you deal with it. You must live the life you want and not let blindness stop you from achieving your goals.”

Her advice for others starting their journeys at BISM is simple but powerful: “Take the time to figure out what you want to do with your life and make the most of the program to get there.”

Determination paired with the right resources can turn challenges into opportunities. Thanks to supporters like you, individuals like Alicia can build confidence, pursue their dreams, and live life on their terms.
