Empowering Blind Youth Through Summer Experiences
Summer is in full swing at Blind Industries and Services of Maryland (BISM), and our youth programs are already making an impact across the state. Designed specifically for blind and low-vision students, these hands-on programs provide more than just summer fun—they help build confidence, independence, and real-world skills in a supportive, inclusive environment.
From career exploration in Baltimore to confidence-building camps on the Eastern Shore, students of all ages are diving into new experiences, learning from blind mentors, and gaining tools they’ll carry with them long after summer ends.

GOLD STAR
For students ages 16–21, this fully residential program blends job readiness training with a short-term internship at a local business or nonprofit. Students gain practical work experience while developing key skills in self-advocacy, professionalism, and independence.
S.T.A.R. (Students Training in Advocacy and Responsibility)
Open to youth ages 14–21, S.T.A.R. is a week-by-week program where students explore a new career field each session. Past themes have included education, hospitality, engineering, government, and marketing—plus a trip to the National Federation of the Blind’s National Convention.
“Each week offers something new, and students walk away with knowledge, exposure, and a sense of empowerment,” says Emma Myer, Associate of Youth Services and S.T.A.R. Coordinator.

Challenge Week
For older youth, this program mixes classic summer fun—like swimming, horseback riding, and campfires—with immersive blindness training, giving students the tools to build confidence and independence.
“This is our 10th year running youth programs on the Eastern Shore,” says Danielle Earl, Youth Services Coordinator in Salisbury. “It’s incredible to see the growth that happens in just one week.”
