Together we are positively changing attitudes about blindness.
Established in 1908 by the Maryland General Assembly, BISM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports the blind and low-vision community by providing stable career opportunities, innovative rehabilitation programs, economic and personal independence, and resources for training and education.
Employing
BISM is the largest employer of blind individuals in Maryland with more than 500 employees working across 12 facilities. We provide meaningful employment opportunities at every level of the organization—from entry-level positions to leadership roles—creating pathways for growth, advancement, and long-term careers.
Training
Through our Independence Training & Rehabilitation (ITR) programs, individuals of all ages who are blind gain the skills and confidence needed for independent living and employment. Training includes braille literacy, cane travel, independent living skills—such as cooking, cleaning, and budgeting—and access to technology, all led by blind instructors.
Education
BISM raises awareness about blindness; educates about our programs and services; and fosters collaboration with like-minded organizations and businesses. Serving as a valuable resource on blindness, we are able to exchange ideas and share knowledge in hopes of creating a more inclusive, informed society.
Manufacturing
BISM’s manufacturing facilities in Baltimore, Salisbury, and Raleigh, NC produce over 700 high quality products for state, federal, and commercial customers, including military uniforms, cleaning supplies, and office supplies. Funds generated from BISM’s manufacturing operations, sales revenue, and donations provide support for the independence training programs.
