Blind Industries and Services of Maryland's WINGS youth program tours Dover International Speedway on August 8, 2006
Baltimore, MD - Blind Industries and Services of Maryland (BISM),
a not-for-profit organization that provides training and employment for blind citizens of Maryland
and surrounding states, brings its Winning Independence Now Guarantees Success (WINGS) program to
Dover International Speedway for a tour on Tuesday, August 8 at 1 p.m.
WINGS, now in its eighth year, began July 16 and runs through August 18. The intensive
five-week residential summer program is for transitional blind youth, ages 15 to 21, who are
preparing for employment or post-secondary education. The program takes place at BISM's Baltimore
headquarters and at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County campus. This year's WINGS class
consists of residents from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The WINGS participants receive top quality training from BISM's blind professional staff and
counselors in everything from cane travel to independent living skills to computer technology to
Braille. In addition, the program's schedule is jam-packed with fun and exciting adventures that
build self-esteem and confidence.
Gary Camp, Director of Public Relations for Dover International Speedway, will conduct the tour
and Dover-based Monster Racing will supply race cars, trucks and other tactile objects for the WINGS
participants to inspect.
This is a great opportunity for media outlets to learn about BISM and to witness the type of
impact our organization has on blind youth. BISM has over 400 Associates, most of which are
blind, and manufactures over 150 products in facilities located in Baltimore, Salisbury and
Cumberland. BISM's innovative training division offers programs that teach real-world skills,
build self-confidence and prepare blind and visually impaired people for the everyday challenges
of family, home, school and work. For more information on BISM, visit www.bism.org, and contact
Mr. Ennamorato for more information on the Dover International Speedway tour.
