KIDS Camp...PLUS!
Kids Independence Development Summer Camp
KIDS Camp…PLUS! Is a fun, educational, weeklong, residential camp for
children who are blind or visually impaired.
Level 1 addresses the needs and interests of elementary schoolers,
with extra focus on activities of daily living and social skills.
Level 2, for middle schoolers, is an adventurous and challenging week of camping
and rigorous activities. Blind Industries and Services of Maryland sponsors
KIDS Camp...PLUS! in partnership with the Maryland Organization of Parents of Blind Children.
At KIDS Camp…PLUS!, students who are blind develop appropriate blindness skills,
peer relationships, a sense of identity and increased self-esteem through extended learning
periods with adult role models who are also blind.
While they learn to do lots of neat things such as spreading peanut butter
and jelly for sandwiches, pouring milk and juice, and grilling hot dogs,
adult buddies who are blind, teach the kids that it is okay to be blind.
They also learn to read and follow a tactile map during an outing, take
hikes on trails using their white canes, ride the city bus and visit the
Library for the Blind. By practicing their social skills they make new friends
and have lots of fun playing games and running relay races, just like other
kids their age.
KIDS Camp...PLUS! is the place to be when you want to learn and have
fun. For more information about tuition fees and a camp application, contact
