BISM expands Senior Programs With New Senior Support Group

BISM Cumberland Facility 2nd Friday of Each Month 10 am-12 pm

Cumberland, MD - The Senior Services division of Blind Industries and Services of Maryland (BISM), a not-for-profit organization that provides training and employment opportunities for blind citizens of all ages, has expanded its Cumberland senior programs to include a new Senior Support Group.

The support group is for blind and visually impaired seniors, and will meet on the second Friday of each month, from 10 am to 12 pm, at BISM's Cumberland facility located on 322 Paca Street. The first Senior Support Group session takes place on October 12.

The purpose of the new support group is to help seniors find positive solutions to vision loss, while developing relationships with other seniors who are experiencing vision loss.

In addition, group members will learn about skills training programs offered at BISM, participate in group discussions and activities that boost self esteem, learn about adaptive technology, and receive information about services beneficial to the blind and visually impaired.

The Senior Support Group is an extension of the Seniors Taking Active Roles in Society (STARS) training program that meets every Monday and Wednesday from 10 am to 3 pm at the same location.

STARS is a training-based program designed to develop skills necessary to function as a productive, independent blind senior citizen. Classes include Computer Technology, Independent Living (includes cooking and home maintenance), Cane Travel, and Braille. The curriculum also includes Adjustment to Blindness Seminars, Adaptive Technology and Product Demonstrations, and exciting Community Outings and Activities. New members are always welcome, and BISM is proud to offer senior services at no charge.

For more information regarding the new Senior Support Group and/or STARS program, please contact Roger Williamson (rwilliamson@bism.org) or Anita Adkins (aadkins@bism.org) at (301) 724-4111 or (888) 267-4111. To discover more about BISM, visit www.bism.org.
